CARL was born 29 Nov. 1812 in Olstykke, Frederiksborg, Denmark. His father was JORGEN ANDREASEN and his mother ANNE KIRSTINE HANSEN ARENFELDT.

[There has been a considerable amount of research to establish his parents. The actual birth records in Denmark list his parents as JORGEN ANDREASON and ANE KIRSTINE HANSEN. (When he did his own endowment work, the sheet listed his parents as MORTEN JORGENSEN and ANNE C. ARMFELT. It is felt the MORTON JORGENSEN is an error by the temple recorder. He probably asked CARL what his father's name was and he said JORGEN. The recorder assumed that because CARL's name was MORTENSEN, that his father's first name was MORTEN and that the last name was JORGENSEN.) Because of the patronymic names, the lack of any information on a JORGEN ANDREASEN, and that the father of the other children of his mother was CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN, the researcher in Denmark believes the father was CHRISTOPHER.

[The mother's name appears differently on a number of birth records of her children and elsewhere: ANNE KIRSTINE HANSDOTTER, ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELDT (AHRENFELDT), ANNE DORTHEA MORTENSDOTTER, ANNE KIRSTINE ANDERSEN.] [The father of her children is CHRISTOFFER (CHRISTOPHER) MORTENSEN except for the case of CARL FREDERICK where JORGEN ANDREASEN is listed.]

The Kongsted church record show his father as, JORGEN ANDREASEN, small farmer and glassmaker and mother ANE KIRSTINE HANSDOTTER. CARL was born at Olstykke, Fredericksborg while parents were on way from oen (the island of) Nyord to their home in Eskildstrup. He was home christened 29 Nov. 1812 with the christening confirmed 13 Dec. 1812. “CARL FREDERIK MORTENSEN, born in Eskildstrup in Kongsted parish at Sjaelland. According to his baptism certificate he was a son of smallholder and glazier JORGEN ANDREASEN in the village of Olstykke in Frederiksborg county, and his wife ANE KIRSTINE HANSDATTER. Baptized in the home 29 Nov. 1812, brought to the church in Kongsted 13 Dec. 1812. Knowledge: rather good. – Behavior: good. Remarks: The mother, normally called ANE KIRSTINE ARENFELD, has most probably never married, and this son, as well as several of his siblings, grown up and has been raised by the poor-law authorities in Toreby as illigitimate children. Vaccinated 15 July 1820 by ‘krigsraad’ Schow in Sakskobing.”

The next child, HANS, born Aug. 1814 and chr. 29 Jan. 1815 in Nykobing church. The parents are listed as CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN and ANNE DORETHEA HANSDOTTER, vagrants and prisoners.

MORTON CHRISTOPHERSEN's entry states "mother says he was born in May 1816." He was christened at Nykobing church 16 Mar 1817. Parents: CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN, glassmaker and mother ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELD, both vagrants and prisoners and in prison.

ARENFELD CHRISTOPHERSEN's birth is given as Mar. 1818 in Nykobing and christened 5 July 1818. Mother's name is ANNA KIRSTINE ARNFELD and recently arrested.

FLORINTINE was born 12 Sep. 1819 and christened 15 Sep. 1819 in Bornehuset in Copenhagen city. The father, CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN and the mother a prisoner in the "reform prison" ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELDT. “FLORENTINE, born 12 Sept. 1819, bapt. 15 Sept. 1819. The alleged father is CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN, formerly glazier, and the mother is ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELD, prisoner in the correction house. Witnesses: carried by ANNE MARIE BENDER. Remarks: illegitimate child.” She was confirmed at Toreby in 1834. “FLORINTINE CHRSTOFFERSEN, born in Copenhagen, illegitimate child of ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELDT, who has died in the Correction House of Copenhagen, and the former glazier CHRISTOFFER MORTENSEN. Has been raised by the poor-law authorities with farmer HANS NIELSEN in Flinterup; born in the Correction House in Copenhage 12 Sept. 1819 and baptized there on the 15th the same month. Notes: bookreading: acceptable. – Writing: acceptable. – Mathematics: rather good. – Knowledge of religion: good. – Behavior: very good. Vaccinated 18 June 1823 by ‘krigsraad’ Schou.”

CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN was born 9 November 1821 and christened 14 Nov. 1821 in the sickhouse. Mother: ANNE KIRSTINE ANDERSEN, prisoner and father CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN, glassmaker. He died in the prison at age 1 1/2 years. “CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN, born 9 Nov. 1821, baptized 14 Nov 1821 at the room for the sick people. The mother is ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELDT, prisoner in the correction house: the alleged father is CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN, glazier. Witnesses: carried by the prisoner in the correction house ANNE DORTHEA JONASSEN. Remarks: illegitimate child,”

In the 1834 census of Toreby these children, STINA (FLORENTINE), MORTEN, and ARENFELT are listed as foster children in different families. Why were they sent there? Were they relatives or was it just a financial arrangement by officials? CARL FREDERICK's confirmation record in Toreby lists his parents as in the birth records. Then there is a note that states "We know that the mother, is called ANE KIERSTINE ARENFELD and is not married and has other illegitimate children who are being taken care of by the Toreby poor chest.”

The movements of ANNE KIRSTINE ARENFELDT indicate she was "natmand" or "gypsy like." These people often became "glaremesters" which is socially one jot above "natmand." ANNE KIRSTINE AHRENFELDT died 9 March 1823, a prisoner and was buried 12 March 1823 at age 40. CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN died 9 March 1847, a prisoner for life. He was age 65 and born in Annisse in Sjaelland. [No church, census, or military levying records for him were found there.] The same information for his age and birth was found in the 1845 census. (In all the records searched around Annisse not one entry was found for CHRISTOPHER MORTENSEN. However, a JORGEN ANDREASEN was found in the confirmation records of Annisse. He was confirmed in 1803 and would have been around 14 to 18 years old, making his birth around 1785-1789. A christening record was found in 1786 for ANDERS JORGENSEN and wife, KAREN ANDERSDATTER's son JORGEN.)

The 1841 Military Levying Roll lists CARL's birth place as Eskildstrup with father's name as JORGEN ANDREASEN. (This probably came from his christening certificate.) notes on the rolls: "JORGEN ANDREASEN is working for NIELS CHRISTOFFERSEN in Eskilstrup. The father should have met with the authorities in 1814 session, but he wasn't under their control because he had moved and was outside of the official jurisdictions, but had moved unlawfully. Child moved away with father soon after christened and they think they went to Olstykke. They had questioned people in the Olstykke area but father and son were not found."

CARL married 17 Oct. 1841 to KAREN JENSEN in Toreby, Maribo, Den. Four sons, and three daughters were born there. CARL joined the LDS Church in 1852.

MORTEN CARLSEN, born 2 Feb. 1842 at Grenge, Toreby, Maribo, Den. The Toreby LDS Branch records show he emigrated 4 Dec. 1862. He came as CARLSEN but changed it after he was in Utah. Some have said he went to Idaho. He was listed in the 1900 census in Mt. Pleasant with his wife and a son PETER.

DORTHE KIRSTINE CARLSEN, born 23 Dec. 1843 at Grange, Toreby, Maribo, Den. The LDS Branch records show she was excommunicated in 1858. She was not listed on the ship's list of emigrants.
HANS CARLSEN (MORTENSEN) born 12 Apr 1847 at Idelundhuse, Radsted, Maribo, Den.
PEDER CARLSEN born 9 Dec 1849 at Birket, Maribo, Den.
PAULINE CARLSEN born 4 June 1853 at Birket, Maribo, Den.
ANE TOMINA CARLSEN born 26 May 1856 at Flintinge, Birket, Maribo, Den.
JENS JOSPEH CARLSEN born 13 Nov. 1858 at Flintinge, Birket, Maribo, Den. He was found in the 1900 Piute Co. - Junction City census.

The family, except for DORTHE. emigrated in 1862. The records indicate they came under the name of MORTENSEN, even though it was CARLSEN in Denmark.

His wife and two young daughters died enroute. Elder OLA NILSSON STOHL, who crossed the Atlantic in the ship "Electric" kept a journal. Sunday, May 25. "A little girl (PAULINE MORTENSEN) a daughter of CARL FREDRIK MORTENSEN, died in the evening. She was the third of his family who had died since we came on board."

VEDA MORTENSEN wrote: "Dad said his father told them the older boys often carried their little brother on their shoulders. The father and four sons came together. The mother and daughters had died and were buried at sea."

He and four sons settled in Ephraim, Utah. He married CHRISTINA (STINE) PETERSEN there as his second wife. The 1870 census for Sanpete County showed FREDERICK MORTENSEN, wife CHRISTINA and son JAMES in Ephraim. VEDA says "uncle JIM had gone to Idaho."

He died 1875 in Ephraim, Sanpete, Utah
