Jonathan Bingham 1712|KNWB-QP6,KNW5-WX4

JONATHAN BINGHAM was born 17 Aug. 1712 in Windham, Windham, Connecticut to ABEL BINGHAM and ELIZABETH ODELL. He was the third son and eighth child in the family.

JONATHAN had two older brothers to work and to inherit the family farm, thus, his father sent him to live with his childless uncle, JONATHAN and ANN HUNTINGTON BINGHAM. There, JONATHAN was known as JONATHAN, Jr. He, later, established his own house on a 150 acre tract owned by his uncle and inherited that tract for “Love and affection.” When his uncle died in 1751. By then JONATHAN had six children of his own.

JONATHAN married MARY ABBE when both were twenty-one years, old on 9 May 1734, in Windham Connecticut. MARY was one of thirteen children of EBENEZER ABBE and MARY ALLEN and also had grown up in Windham. JONATHAN and MARY had one child, JONATHAN, before MARY died twelve days later 4 Mar 1735 in Windham.

Nine months later, 7 Jan 1736, Jonathan married, second, widow SARAH UPTON. She had been married to MALTIAH VINTON. Barbour’s vital records give the month as June, but this is probably a transcription error since JONATHAN and SARAH’s first child was born 14 Nov. 1736. SARAH had one daughter by her previous marriage to MALTIAH VINTON. Born 8 Dec 1733 and named SARAH, this child became the oldest in JONATHAN and SARAH’s new family which expanded to two more boys, and two more girls giving them a family of seven children in all. Note that their first girl was named MARY, for JONATHAN’s first wife and their first boy was Named MALTIAH for SARAH’s first husband.

JONATHAN and SARAH lived long lives, both of them through the American Revolution. JONATHAN appeared in Windham in the 1790 U.S. census for Connecticut showing 3 males over 16, 1 male under 16, and 5 females. These figures probably indicate that his son MALTIAH, and family lived with him. MALTIAH had been active in military affairs from 1757 through the end of the American Revolution, consequently away from home much of the time and did not appear on the U. S. census until 1800, the year of his father’s death. JONATHAN was 87 when he died 16 Feb. 1800 in Windham. SARAH lived three more years and died age ninety three 5 Mar 1803 in Windham.
