Documentation for GEORGE
NEHGR 4:284 GEORGE’s will lists the names of four sons and says there are 5 lesser children. His wife’s name is CATHERINE. Sons: MATTHEW, HENRY, SAMUEL, WILLIAM.
9:317 GEORGE ALLEN buried in Sandwich 2 May 1648
25:14 Lists GEORGE on ship’s passenger list with wife and 3 sons. His age is incorrect and indicates at least one son is from a previous wife. (GEORGE age 24(?), CATHERINE age 30, GEORGE age 16, WILLIAM age 8, MATTHEW age 6.)
83:511 List GEORGE as being 70 when he dies in 1648 (therefore b. ~1578)
125:231 Talks of JOSHUA ALLEN and references the case that JOSHUA is the son of GEORGE ALLEN. It provides some good data on the family. A copy of this is included in this “Allen” folder

Status: GEORGE ALLEN came from England. He had a family with a first wife and then came to America with a second wife and had several more children born here. There is undocumented information on each of the kids. The names of the wives are a little confused, and the location in England is uncertain. Looking through the NEHGR brings up bits and pieces on GEORGE and some of the children and I have entered this into PAF. (There are a lot of ALLENs and it is hard to separate them. We need to find a published, well researched book in order to gain some assurance of the data. I went through the igi batch lists for each of the locations mention for the ALLENs, but found nothing.

Looked at “GEORGE ALLEN of Weymouth” by JOHN KERMOTT ALLEN, 1924. It is on–line via the SL library and is really quite good with all the references and sources. It is still quite sparse due to the lack of good documentation existing.

Film 547019, Item 8 “A Sandwich – Dartmouth – North Kingston ALLEN Line,” by BERTHA CLARK.
Film 858659, Item 10, “Genealogy of GEORGE ALLEN of Sandwich,” by MARGARET ISABEL BREWSTER.

Looked at Genealogy of GEORGE ALLEN. References a few sources indicating there is not really a lot of definitive information. Lists children without defining which wife they are from. Shows that GEORGE’s father doesn’t have documented information.

Went through the “Sandwich-Dartmouth Allen line.” It is very well documented and shows that there are no real records of births, marriages, etc. BERTHA CLARK lists many entries from various records that shows that certain people with certain names were there. By sorting and thinking, she puts together the family as well as it can be. She shows that some of the main listings have recording errors in them. The NEHGR 125:231 says she explains how JOSHUA fits in as a son of GEORGE. I can’t find the quotation, however.

Called RICHARD BOWEN who wrote an article in the NEHGR v 155:212 on GEORGE ALLEN and I asked him about the connection between JOSHUA and GEORGE. He said it has been over five years since he worked on that and he couldn’t remember anything now.

Went through the Guilford books. They strongly support that JOSHUA ALLEN is the son of GEORGE ALLEN. Putting together the family for GEORGE ALLEN is difficult because there are no specific birthdates for any of the family and no real lists of the family. The family is put together from various entries in land and civil records, wills, etc. and by making approximations from them. Death dates are better defined if the proper individuals can be identified.
Several authors have put together families but each are somewhat different with additional children and various orders of births. Guilford put together a family in Vol. I. Then others critiqued and made changes. Vol II reviewed these and came out with a revised family that seems to be as good as available. That is the basis of the records in our data.
