Henry Calvin Johns was my maternal grandfather or Papa (pronounced paupauwhich is the name all of us called him). His wife and most of hisfriends called him Calvin.

Here is a story about him that I always enjoyed. It was related to me bymy mother. Before my Grandfather learned to drive a car. He walked orused a horse and wagon. The first time he attempted to drive a car. Itbelonged to his brother-in-law, Albert Small. He was in an old Model Twhich was parked at the house. He was driving down the road on thefarm. As he approached the closed gate, he attempted to stop the car.He pulled backward very hard on steering wheel and shouted "Whoa". Hewas still pulling on the steering wheel and shouting "Whoa" when the carhit the gate and stopped.

Grandfather did a number of jobs during his life.

From pictures it looks like the early 1920s he moved his family toFlorida. There the family lived in town and also owned a citrus farm.He lost the farm to foreclosure after losing his crops.

Later he moved his family to Pasadena, California near one of his wife'ssisters, Mayola Nichols Moore. For a while he and his brother-in-law,George Dewey, were in some type of business together.

For some reason, he and his family returned from California to Arkansaswhere he worked for a while as a deputy sheriff. My Aunt Jettie relatedthe following story about him. He was always attempting to protectNegros from injustices from whites. Because he was afraid of reprisalsand the fact that he was often out late at night, he taught his wife andoldest son, Waldo, to use a shotgun. Coming home late one night, hedecided to play a trick on his wife so he wandered around the housemaking various noises. When he finally reached the door, he was met bythis 5 foot 2 lady wielding a loaded shotgun pointed directly at him.Needless to say his wife did not see the humor instead she was furiouswith him because she had almost killed him. He never played that trickon her again.

He took up farming but decided to relocate. It may have been that he wasshare cropping. My Aunt Jettie said that during the night Grandmotherand the daughters would gather around and sing songs. This was adiversion so the landlord would not hear my Grandfather and Waldo couldloading part of the crop onto wagons. They then took the crop and soldit to get some money. After about a week, Grandmother and daughters sangto cover the sound of Grandfather and Waldo loading furniture andbelongings. They left Arkansas for Texas. Initially they lived in theGillum, Texas area. Later they relocated to the Longview, Texas area.

When they first moved to Longview, Texas, he operated a farm producestand on the East Marshal Highway.

During his later years he was sort of peddler, I don't remember what hesold but I do remember the carts he built to carry the items. They wereabout 4ft by 3ft by 3ft high. They had two bicycle wheels set slightlyaft of center. It had a bar like handle across the back. You presseddown on the bar to lift the cart off of the front supports. Thenbalancing the cart on the wheels, you could push the cart and load.
My memories of him revolved around him purchasing lots surrounding hishome and building houses on them. These he resold.

During his final years, Grandfather worked parttime as a crossing guardat an elementry school in Longview.
