The numbers indicate the generations of Griesers/Greasers. The family still living in Germany spell their name Grieser. The original family is said to have come into Germany after the reformation period in the early 1600's. Many of the German farmers were killed in the Odenwald section of Germany over the wars between the Catholics and Martin Luther's followers. The ruling person then sent representatives into Switzerland to bring farm families into Germany to populate and farm the lands. The German Reformed Church where the Grieser family worships serves 17 small villages. It is located approximately 1 hour driving time north of Frankfort in Schlierbach. We were there for one week during 9/11/2001 with 28 members of the Greaser clan from 6 states. Two years after that four of the German Griesers came to the Untied States to visit and see where the two brothers lived and died in the Morrison Cove area called Clover Creek. The brothers and some of the family are buried in the Salem Reformed Church at Clover Creek, Blair County, PA. Sadly, we have no pictures of Jacob and Catharine, but do have a picture of his older brother Johann Georg Grieser and wife, Agnesia Katzenmeyer who came to America approximately 1832. The names underlined are the direct line of descendants to my husband. If you can add anything to my information please let me know.

In a letter to Paul H. Greaser, in 1967, his niece, Helen Greaser Troxell said a family Bible, at that time, was in Bob’s (their brother) possession. The following list composed by her sister Geraldine from that Bible states 2 children died in Germany and 1 on board ship and that Mary, Catherine, Elizabeth and Barbara were born in Oberlandenbach, Germany, but also said they had 12 children. The list only has two children dead before they left for America. Jacob and Catharine probably came to America in 1842 or prior to daughter Mary’s birth in 1843.

I just discovered the most interesting 1860 US Census Pennsylvania, Blair, Huston 20 entry. It is for Joseph Andrews. Well, the Andrews is a census worker's interpretation of Endres. No wonder it took so long to find it - another genealogist on the Endres lines pointed it out to me. BUT... what is so neat about it is that it has

It is not unusual in my research experience for a census worker to be inaccurate and spell names as they hear them and not as they really are. Interesting he wrote Andrews for Endres. But what this shows is that Mary B. Greaser's mother, Catharina, was living with them with some of Mary's younger brothers and sisters. The "Greaser" name actually occurs with this group in the entry. Catharina's husband, Johann Jacob Grieser, died in 1854 so it is not unusual that she be living with a married daughter.
