ALDOUS, in conjunction with others, received the right to land in Fressingfield in 1518. This was a gift from his father, mother and brother. In 1524 THOMAS paid tax in Fressingfield. In 1528, when his father's will was written, THOMAS was still living in his parents' home and was to take care of his mother when his father eventually died. His father willed him land and meadows in the hamlet of Wittingham, in the parish of
Fressingfield.

Records indicate that THOMAS was around forty years of age when he married and that his bride was probably more than fifteen years younger than he. The couple continued to live in Fressingfield after their wedding, became parents of at least eight children and were in very comfortable circumstances.

THOMAS acquired property in addition to what he had received by gift and inheritance from his father. On 10 November 1537, about the time he was married, he purchased two pieces of land in the parish where he lived. The first piece, woods and a meadow, contained nine and a half acres less three perches. For this he paid forty-six shillings eight pence per acre. It was bounded by LAUNCE WOOD, a tenement of WILLIAM
TOPPESFELD called Edwards Hill to the west, and a tenement of the manor of Veales. The second piece was called "Pristys (Priest's) Meadow and "Pristes Wood." THOMAS also gained holdings in the neighboring parishes of Wingfield, Syleham and Stradbrooke.

In 1566, THOMAS became concerned for the welfare of his family because he was "now fallen into age," and his health was declining. Most of his children were still young, only one being married and THOMAS wrote his will in order that their needs would be met when he passed away. The will was written 4 April 1566.

In his will THOMAS directed that his body be buried in the parish church or the churchyard of Fressingfield. He remembered with bequests the poor people of Fressingfield, Wingfield, and Pulham Magdalen. For the duration of her widowhood, THOMAS gave AGNES the tenement and land where they lived in Fressingfield, except for a close of fourteen acres called Wakelyns, which THOMAS had lately purchased from RICHARD BARBOR. AGNES was to bring up their minor children, nourish them with meat and drink, and provide them with clothes and other necessities until they were each twenty years of age. If she died or remarried before all of the children were sixteen years of age, the eldest son JAMES, already married was to take care of those under sixteen.

Son JAMES, on the death or remarriage of his mother, was to receive the home property in Fressingfield provided for her use. He was also to have the fourteen acres called Qakelyns and another close in Fressingfield in two pieces and containing four and a half acres.

THOMAS held this by indenture of NICHOLAS BARBOR. For the privilegeof having right to his close JAMES was to pay to his brother WILLIAM twenty pounds. In his will THOMAS also named the children of JAMES, his grandchildren, ROBERT, JAMES, AGNES, and MARY ALDOWS. They were each to have twenty shillings when they reached their twenty-first birthdays.

Son WILLIAM received no specific land by his father's will, but he was over twenty-one years of age and probably had already received land as a gift. He was to share with his mother and brothers THOMAS and FRANCIS the residue of the state after named legacies were distributed.

Son THOMAS was under twenty-one years of age when his father's will was prepared. By the will he was to receive land and tenements in Wingfield and Syleham, in Suffolk and was to surrender to his brother FRANCIS his rights to land and tenements in neighbouring Stradbroke.

THOMAS was also to have specific timber and all of his father's part in a lease of the part of Wakelyns that his father shared with WILLIAM ALDOUS of Wittingham. Wakelyns belonged to the manor of Wittingham.

Son FRANCIS, in addition to the Stradbrook lands, was to receive three Fressingfield properties. These consisted of lands and tenements called Talboot; an unnamed close containing four acres; and "Pristes,"which the will describes as "one wood and medow adjoining containing nine acres." FRANCIS could take possession at the age of twenty-one.

THOMAS bequeathed to his daughters ANNE, MARGARET, and JOHANE (JOAN) each
thirty pounds, two "milch kine." and a pair of sheets. They should have these when they married or when they reached the age of twenty-one.

As well as wife and children, THOMAS named others in his will. Amongst these were his servant RICHARD CALVER and ELIZABETH GIRLING, his god children, unnamed, his brother-in-law NICHOLAS BARBOR, and the children of RICHARD ALDOWS of Wingfield: THOMAS, GEORGE, and FRANCES.

THOMAS lived more than three years after the writing of his will, and in this period he sold the land that he had been given by his father in 1518. The deed of the transaction is dated 20 may 1568 and reveals that THOMAS ALDOUS of Fressingfield, YEOMAN, for five pounds paid to him by SIMON TOPPESFELD, gentleman, demised and released to the said SIMON a messuage, once built upon, with land adjacent, in Fressingfield, which said THOMAS had by the gift of WILLIAM ALDOUS, late of Fressingfield, deceased, his father. The late WILLIAM ALDOUS had received the property by the gift of NICHOLAS WARNER, his father, and said NICHOLAS had it by gift of THOMAS COOKE of Wingfield made in a deed dated 15 August 1442. The said THOMAS COOKE formerly had the messuage by gift of JOHN BALIE of Fressingfield by a deed dated 4 March 1431.

The death of THOMAS ALDOUS occurred in September of 1569 at about age 71.

In 1579 two of THOMAS' and AGNES' children, son FRANCIS, and daughter JOHANE, were named in the will of their grandmother, ALICE BARBOR.

AGNES lived as a widow for more than twelve years and managed the parts of the family farm that THOMAS had willed to her. She probably continued to use the homemaking skills that she had learned so long ago from her own mother, duties that included making malt and from it brewing ale, spinning yarn from flax and wool, and making cheese.

On 6 March 1581/2, two months before her death, AGNES wrote her will. So that her children and granchildren would have good milk and creamand cheese her first legacy was "to everye one of my sommes and daughters one mylche cow of the best." She directed that her leinynge (linen) be divide among her daughters.

She named two daughers in her will. JOHANE (JOAN) had been married to RICHARD FRESTON for less than a year. RICHARD'S sisters FRANCES, and MARY were already AGNES'S daughters-in-law, married to her sons THOMAS and FRANCIS. AGNES gave to JOAN "all my yarne and flaxe my best gownemy framed chest and my lessest caldrone." AGNES gave to her daughter MARGARET "my furred gowne."

AGNES probably felt that her sons, JAMES, WILLIAM and THOMAS were well enough established and equipped that they needed no specific legacies, thus she gave items to her youngest son FRANCIS and to her son-in-law RICHARD FRESTON. To FRANCIS she bequeathed "my beest brasse panne and my lesest brasse potte, ten bushells of wheat and fyve combes of mault or barley, x (ten) of my best mylk boulls and my yonge mare and my cartwith ii (two) payer of trayce (traces) and one collar my plough and all my plowgh arnes (irons) and my harrowes." To RICHARD she bequeathed "a payer of my beest trayce and a coller and my chese fat (vat) and the braad therto belonginge."

Milk was cured in the cheese vat until curd was formed, then came cutting the curd up, and afterwards emptying the lumps into the"broad" cylindrical hoop and pressing them down to ripen into a tasty cheese.

AGNES gave various amounts of money to "the poore people in Fresingfeld," MARYE ALLDOWES my bellchild (grandchild). "every one of the residue of my bellchildren," "CATHERING GODBOULDE the daugher of WILLIAM GODBULDE," "ANNE BARBER my servant," "the widowe FEVERYEARE of Stradbrooke," and "ELIZABETH ADAMS."

"The residue," AGNES continued in her will, "of all my good chattlells implements and stuff of household of what kind name or condicionsoever they be heretofore not geven nor bequeathed, shall be evenly and equally devided among all my children, and I do ordayne and make JAMES my sonne and THOMAS my sonne executors."

AGNES was buried in Fressingfield churchyard on 10 May 1582.
