Mary Bingham, born in Saint Johnsbury, 1 April 1820; died in Ogden at the home of her daughter, Mary (Snow) Boyle, 25 September 1893. Married (1) Elijah Norman Freeman, 1843 or 1844, in Nauvoo, (2) Willard Snow, and (3) Lorin Farr. Elijah Norman Freeman was born 17 April 1822 in Vermont, son of Isaac F. and Lydia Freeman. He married Mary in Hancock, Illinois, and shortly after they removed to Nauvoo, where Elijah spent much of his time laboring on the Temple. Elijah and Mary left Nauvoo in 1846 with eighteen-month-old Elijah, Jr. (born in LaHarpe, 20 May 1845; married Anna Maria Poulson in Salt Lake, 11 March 1872, and Mary Ellen Farley in Salt Lake, 24 April 1876; died in Salt Lake, 14 March 1936). They had traveled in Daniel Spencer's company as far as Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Elijah joined the Mormon Battalion as a member of Company "B." Placed to work among the sick, he soon became ill himself and passed away in New Mexico, 28 November 1846. He was buried four miles south of Secoro, on the Rio Grande.
Mary married her second husband, Willard Snow, in 1849. On 9 February 1850, she gave birth to a daughter, Mary (married John Adam Boyle in Salt Lake, 9 April 1867; died in Ogden, 1 August 1920). In 1852, church authorities called upon Willard to preside over the Scandinavian mission. Shortly after his departure, Mary gave birth to a son, Alma, who died soon after his birth. Willard, having become ill during his mission, died 21 August 1853, while in transit from Denmark to England. He was buried at sea.
Mary's third husband, Lorin Farr, son of Winslow Farr and Olive Hovey Freeman, was born in Waterford, Vermont, 27 July 1820. He was also a member of Daniel Spencer's Company. He took Mary as his fourth (polygamous) wife in Salt Lake City, 2 December 1854 (or 1853). By this union, Mary had three sons, all born in Ogden: (1) Willard, born 5 July 1856, married Mary Ballantyne and Mary Ann Ronney; died in Pheonix, Maricopa, Arizona, 18 November 1951; (2) Erastus, born 14 May 1859, died 28 June 1859; (3) Isaac Farwell, born in Ogden, 23 May 1860; married Isabel Poulter in Salt Lake, 23 February 1882; died in Ogden, 8 March 1935. Lorin Farr was first president of Weber stake and president of the high priests' quorum in 1850-51. He erected the first grist and saw mills in Weber county; was a member first territorial legislature from Weber county, and represented Box Elder county from the time of the organization of the territory until 1887. He was the first mayor of Ogden 1851-70 (re-elected in 1877) and served on a mission to Europe in 1870. Prominent in the building of railroads, he supervised the grading of the Central Pacific line for two hundred miles west of Ogden and also the construction of the Utah Northern from Ogden to Brigham City. Lorin had five wives in all: Nancy B. Chase (1 January 1845) by whom he had eleven children; Sarah Giles (26 July 1851), nine children; Olive Ann Jones (28 February 1852), seven children; Mary; and Nicheline Erickson (29 January 1857), six children. He died in Ogden, 12 January 1909. [Richard Bingham]

Obituary: Ogden Standar 28 Sep 1893 p 3
"Another Pioneer Gone."
"Another land mark has been removed. In the death of Sister Mary Farr, Utah has lost another of her noble pioneers. She
died at the residence of her son-in-law, John A. Boyle, at 6:55 p.m. September 25, 1893.
"Deceased was the daughter of two other pioneers, the late Bishop Erastus Bingham and Lucinda Gates, all of whom are historical persons, and all of whom have been identified with the first settlement, and the rise and progress of this territory generally, and of Weber county and Ogden City especially.
"Mary Farr was born on the first day of April, 1820, at St. Johnsbury, Caledonia county, Vermont. At an early period of its history her parents united their destiny with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sints and to which they remained faithful as long as they lived. When 13 years of age Mary became a member of the same church, being baptized and confirmed November 11, 1833, in her native town, by Elder Israel Evans.
"She continued to study the doctrines she had espoused from the time she first embraced them and the more she did so the stronger she became convinced that they were true.
"In 1844 she was united in holy wedlock for time and all eternity, with Elder Elijah Norman Freeman. The fruit of this union was one son, E.N. Freeman, who now resides at St. Johns, Arizona. After this marriage, they resided for some time at LaHarpe, (Illinois) until a few months before the exodus, when they removed to the city of Nauvoo. At the time of the expulsion from the last named city they participated in the general privations which their co-religionists suffered in their banishments from their hard earned, peaceful homes, to wander or perish, as might be, in the dreary wilderness in winter time. When the deman was made by the U.S. government for the noble 500, the husband of sister Mary volunteered and was mustered into the Mormon battalion and marched en route for Mexico to defend the flag of this country. He was number 33, company B., Captain Jessee D. Hunter. On the 16th of July the order was given and they marched to Missouri river, and then enroute for the scene of the conflict. After suffering terrible hardship for several months, on the 25th of November, while searching to Pueblo via Santa Fe to winter and when between the above named places, Freeman was taken very sick. He was placed in a vehicle to ride. He received all the attention his comrades were able to give. All was in vain. On the 28th he died. Richard Carter died the same night and the two were buried side by side on the barren plains. Their graves are four miles south of Secora, on the Rio Grande.
"After the departure of the battalion Sister Freeman -- such then was her name -- went with her parents to Ponca where they wintered.
"In the spring of 1847 they struck tents and started on their journey overland with the first company; and on the 20th of September of the same year they arrived in Salt Lake valley, where Salt Lake City now stands. Thus she was one of the early pioneers who helped to redeem the wilderness and make the solitary places glad. She lived to see and participate in its growth and devlopment to its present proud position.
"In the spring of 1849 she again entered the state of matrimony -- this time with Elder Willard Snow, by whom she had two children, one boy and one girl -- the latter is the wife of John A. Boyle. The boy died in his childhood. In 1852 her husband was called to fill a mission to Scandinavia. This work he prosecuted with honor and fidelity the remainder of his life. After taking leave of his family for his foreign mission he never saw them again. While traveling from Denmark to Hull, England, he died and
his remains were committed to the wild waves of the North sea.
"In the spring of 1853 the widow with her young family came north and settled first at Bingham Fort in this county, with her father, the late Bishop Erastus Bingham Sr., after whom the fort was named. It is now called Lynne. In the following year, Dec. 2, 1854, she became the wife of Elder Lorin Farr, then president of the Weber Stake. The fruits of the last marriage were three sons: Willard, who is now living at St. Johns, Arizona, Erastus, who died in his infancy, and Isaac, who resides in Ogden.
"Mary Farr was one of God's noble women. She was exemplary, kind, generous hearted, a devoted wife, loving mother, true friend, and was firm and faithful to her religious convictions. She was the mother of five sons and one daughter. Two of her sons preceded her to the "other side." She was the grandmother of nineteen boys and sixteen girls - thirty-five in all. Seven of the boys and five of the girls are dead. She also has two great-granddaughters who survive her. A numerous posterity still remain
to perpetuate her name in the earth, while a host of friends mourn her demise.
"The funeral services were held in the Fifth ward meeting house on Wednesday afternoon, 27th inst, Bishop T.J. Stevens, presiding. After singing by the choir the opening prayer was offered by Elder John Watson. Consoling addresses were then delivered by Elders Joseph Parry, Joseph Hall, Francis A. Brown, W.W. Burton and Bishop T.J. Stevens. Some of the speakers had known the deceased for nearly forty years; the others had been intimately acquainted with her for a long time. All bore
testimony to her many excellencies -- her noble character, as wife, mother, sister, friend and neighbor. The house was filled with old time acquaintances and friends as well as new ones. Among those present were President L.W. Shurtliff, members of the high council and other leading elders, who evinced their sympathy with, and endorsement of the testimonies the speakers bore to the stirling worth of their deceased friend. At the close of the remarks the choir sang "Nearer My God to Thee." The benediction was pronounced by Elder W.H. Wright.
"An immense cortege followed the remains to the cemetery where they were deposited. The grave was dedicated by Elder George W. Larkins."
