The original Barbers came from England and landed in Richmond, Va. in 1700's. They spelled it "Barbour' and corresponded with some of the family in England and Scotland. They were of Scot-Irish descent. They drifted this way (Alabama). Some went to Cedartown, Ga. One was a probate judge. "Rail Road Jim" Barber is a cousin and prominent in Cedartown, Ga. (This was told to me [JA] by the Barber family in Alabama when mom and I visited them in the late 1960's or early 70's)
(JA Notes from 1968 Alabama genealogical research trip:) GREY BARBER The St. Clair County, Ala 1850 census lists his birth in Ga. In the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, Greenwood, many Barbers are listed in many counties. The Index to US Census of Ga 1820 which is the earlist census, lists many Barbers. The Barber relatives told us the orginal Barbers came from England and they landed in Richmond, Virginia in the 1700's. They spelled it Barbour and corresponded with some relatives in England. They were of Scotch-Irish descent. Some went to Cedartown, Georgia. We found that Grey Barber had a second wife, Pheriba Watts, married 30 May 1854 in St. Clair County, Ala. They were both listed as married before. She also appears on land records with him and in the St. Clair Co, Ala 1860 census with Grey Barber and his children.
David W. Morgan dmorgan@efn.org 22 Dec 1998 says that Grey Barber is the son of James and Penelope Barber of Clarke County, Ga.

THE HISTORY OF ANNIE LOU NICHOLS, Compiled by Phyllis H. Niles 1997, p 42-6 The source says Gray died in Henry Co, GA 1 June 1866
THE HERITAGE OF ST. CLAIR COUNTY, ALABAMA (book) p 91 Gray Barber married 15 August 1816 Charlotte Stedman in Clark Co. GA. They moved immediately to St. Clair Co. AL along with Charlotte's parents, James and Nancy Stedman, and two of Charlotte's sisters, the William Clements and Aaron Hendon families. The Stedmans settled on Canoe Creek near Springville. Gray Barber's parents were James and Penelope Barber. They are buried in Oconee Co. GA. Gray (d. 5 June 1866) and Charlotte (d. 1 Apr 1853) raised their family in Beaver Valley area of St. Clair Co. - Submitted by Bobbi Layton, 35th St. North, Pell City AL
(same book) p 91 Gray Barber (1800 - 6 Jun 1866) was born in and died in St. Clair County, Akabama. He married Charlotte Stedman(1797-1 Jan 1853) in Clark County Georgia in the year 1816. Charlotte is the daughter of James and Nancy Stedman. They came to St. Clair County searching for rich farm land. They found it in what is now called Pell City, Alabama. Family stories say that Gray Barber was a millwright. He was hired by people who wanted to install grist mills. He had the talent to pick the best place on a creek to build dam. The water had to have the correct speed. He was especially talented in cutting the grinding stone. Being from Georgia, he knew about the granite they produced. He had it broughtto Alabama to be cut and used in all the grist mills he set up. The grist mill he set up for himself was located in Coal City, Alabama. Both Gray and Charlotte Barber are buried at Harkey's Chapel, Coal City, Alabama. They had 12 children. He married 2nd, Pharaba Varaman and had 5 children. (same book) p 92 Family tradition indicates that the Barbers probably came from Virginia through the Carolinas into Georgia, before settling in Alabama. Their firstborn was a son, Champion, who entered this world on January 15, 1817. In quick succession came: James S. in 1818, Nancy Belle on February 9, 1819; Penelope in 1821; John Griffin on February 20, 1823; and Sarah in 1826. After a short break came Henry Francis in 1832, Elizabeth in 1834, Minerva in 1840, and Fiola in 1842. A card file in the Momtgomery Archives indicates that Gray was Constable in St. Clair County in 1826. Gray was a volunteer in the Creek Indian War in 1836, serving as private in Captain George M. Patrick's Company of the Alabama Mounted Volunteers in the 4th Regiment of Militia commanded by Colonel L. G. McMillion. He served only 33 days, even though he had volunteered for three months. The "Act of granting Bounty Land to certain offices and soldiers who have been engaged in the military service of the United States," passed September 28, 1850. Gary applied for a Land Warrant for 40 acres on November 16, 1850, in St. Clair County, AL Charlotte died April 1, 1853. Burial place is unknown. Gray Barber is buried at Harkey's Chapel, Coal City, AL in an unmarked grave.
Gray Barber was the first Barber to make his home in St. Clair County, Alabama. His father and mother, James Barber and Penelope, came here for a time; but their roots were in Georgia and they returned to their homeland. Gray settled in Coal City, Alabama. He made his living operating a grist mill and farming his land. His son, John Griffin, followed in his foot-steps. John Griffin, also, learned the saw-milling trade.
I wrote this to Carl Cox Oct 2011: 1850 US Census, Alabama, St Clair, District 39 59 Gray Barber 50 M Laborer Georgia Charlotte “ 53 F Georgia Elizabeth “ 16 F Alabama Minerva “ 10 F Alabama Fidelia “ 8 F Alabama Henry “ 18 M Alabama 1860 US Census, Alabama, St Clair, Townships 14 and 15 53 Gray Barber 62 M Farmer Georgia Pharaba “ 43 F House Wife South Carolina James “ 13 M Alabama Elisabeth “ 10 F Alabama Mahala “ 8 F Alabama Rebecca “ 5 F Alabama Aaron “ 3 F Alabama Susan “ 1 F Alabama There are discrepancies in the lists of Gray Barber’s children in newfamilysearch.org and in my own records – always have been. I have been on his sheets for 60 years and finally have decided to leave them be. I don’t know where Carolyn 1855 fits in – if she fits in. Obviously the mother, Charlotte, had died by this time. I don’t have any notes on her like I keep now. Same for Mary Ann 1853 so it appears some one close in the family submitted her. William Anderson Posey did a lot of temple work. Mary Ann’s ordinances were done in 1895. If the census is correct (probably the best we have available right now), Mahala belongs with Phariba with a different birth date. I have no idea who Manicy 1825 is. I figure the day will come when it will all be clear and we can correct it then. I wish the censuses earlier than 1850 gave us a named list of children with age. I don’t know who Miss Barber 1829 or William C. Barber 1836 are. I am leaving it be for now. It may appear from the 1850 Census that Fidelia may be the youngest birth child for Charlotte which would be age 45 for Charlotte. That is about as late as they get but you never know. ja From: Carl Cox Sent: Sunday, October 09, 2011 9:12 PM To: 'Awerkamp, Dwayne & Jackie' ; drawerkamp@cox.net Subject: newFamilySearch Hi I am working on some of Liz' names, and came across a puzzle. Gray Barber and Charlotte Stedman had a number of children. The last one is Carolyn, who was born 2 years after her mother died. You seem to be the only one who submitter her, and one of the submissions has both wives of Gray as her mother. It would seem that Pheriba should be Carolyn's mother, except that Rebecca was born the same year as Carolyn. We don't seem to have any source for Carolyn. Can you shed any light on where she was found? She has the number, LCJT-GK9 in nFS. Minerva has middle initial C, but she was born 15 years earlier. I also noticed that Charlotte was 56 when Mary Ann was born. I wonder if that is good information? From Charlotte's age, it would seem that Fidelia should have been the last child. The FH support are working very hard to get corrections made, so they are quite easy to do. I can help if I get the correct information. Carl ctcox@Centurytel.net
