Edward Williams' mother was unmarried. His father is not known.

Edward was raised by his aunt and uncle, Rachel Baney and George Williams and he
always went by the name of Williams. (JA - That is why my maiden name is
Williams)

William Edward Williams is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Lock Haven, Penn

William Edward is listed in the 1880 US Census Pennsylvania, Clinton under Valentine & Margaret Baney's family as a grandson with both parents born in Pennsylvania.

March 1967 - About 1960 Chet and Simona Williams went to the court house at Bellefonte, Penn and searched from records to see if they could find where George Williams adopted William Edward Williams. The conclusion is that no records could be found and that the adoption never took place. Even went and saw the undertakers records of William Edward Williams. They also checked for adoption records in Lockhaven, Penn. (JA told to me by Chet and Simona)

Notes for WILLIAM EDWARD WILLIAMS:
"Billy" Williams was known far and wide for his interest in the
actives of the Spanish American Veterans. A member of the John
Hamilion Post, this city he played an active part in the work of local
post, and held something of a record of attending national
encampments. He was present at 36 of the more than 40 national
encampments. One of the last trips was 9,784 -mile jaunt to California
in 1941, during which he attended the encampment held that year in
Omaha, Neb. In California he visited his son, and daughter Albert
Williams and Mrs Marjorie Quarry, at Costa Mesa.

May 10, 2010 by Jacqueline Williams Awerkamp - I have been working in the census records a lot lately. I had taken as fact all my life that William Edward Williams' father was unknown and that he had taken the Williams family name from his aunt and uncle George Washington Williams & Rachel Jane Baney where he was raised. Census records do not bear that out. My father and mother as reported above, search in Pennsylvania to find an adoption of William Edward Williams by George Washington Williams - Rachel Jane Baney's husband and that would explain the Williams name. They never found one. The family would never talk about who the father of William was other than all kinds of scurilous stories about his birth, mother, and father. Aunt Marguariette is supposed to know who his father was but would never tell because it was all mixed up in the family. Leland told me that. That is an interesting piece about it being mixed up in the family. Here is what the census records and marriage records tell me:
William Edward Williams born 1875 was listed in the US 1880 Pennsylvania Census Clinton County, Lamar, District 247, p 23 as six years old in the family of Valentine & Margaret Baney as their grandson and his name on the record is William Williams. So he had the Williams surname in 1880. Rachel Jane Baney didn't marry George Washington Williams till eighteen months later in 1882. So there was no Williams aunt and uncle for William Edward Williams to have lived with at that time to take the Williams name. Seems to me that six years old is very young for a person to decide for themself what their surname will be. In the 1920 US Census in Pennsylvania, William Edward Wiliams appears there with my grandmother Mary Williams and their family including my father. William Edward Williams lists the birthplace of his father as Pennsylvania in that census. In the 1930 US Census Pennsylvania, William Edward Williams is listed all alone. The family had since left him and all gone West through Montana and then on down to southern California. He was living alone in Pennsylvania and I am told Grama had divorced him by then. He is listed as single in that census and also he says his father was born in England. George Washington Williams was not born in England but his father and grandfather's family were. His grandfather had brought his family from Kent, England to live in Pennsylvania. I would think that George Washington Williams would have a distinctive English accent compared to all the Baneys with their German mixed English accent. Everyone all around is born in Pennsylvania - I see nothing of England in the area in the census or family lines EXCEPT for George Washington Williams. Mary Margaret Baney was 16 when she had William Edward Williams getting pregnant when she was 15. George Washington Williams was 22 1/2 when William Edward Williams was born. Rachel Jane Baney who George W Williams will later marry was 12 years old at this time and seems too young to be invovled with George Washington Williams then but Mary Margaret Baney could have been. I have no facts to point to to say that George Washington Williams is William Edward Williams' father but the fact that William Edward Williams was surnamed Williams before there was ever a marriage between G W Williams and Rachel Jane Baney AND that G W Willliams lists his father as English gives this possibility to me. The 1930 census would not have been available to my parents and I don't know that they ever saw the 1880 one. G W Williams is truly mixed up in the family - in other words it was a family type involvement so they didn't want to talk about it. I don't know if my leanings on this are correct but it appears a lot closer to probably reality than anything I ever heard. I don't think my father knew who his father's father was. He only knew he was involved with George Washington Williams. We can never say for sure how this is till some one who knows tells us. But my conclusion is that I am really a "Williams" from Kent, England. That Williams is our real name and not just an assumed one. The 1930 census points to that. I am looking for information as to whether William Edward Williams was actually living with the George Washington Williams family at any time. He has the name from the 1880 census before they ever married. The Williams family and the Baney family lived in the same area. ja

Received this from Wynona Wilson, Mary Jo Quarry's grand daughter May 4, 2012 :sat down and talked with my grama more about William Edward Williams, and his mother Mary Margaret Baney. Mary Margaret had 3 children all out of wedlock. No one knows who the father's were, because it was not talked about. William Edward Williams' younger sister's both had the last name Baney. My grama said that how he got the last name of Williams is that a man with the last name of Williams had wanted to adopt William and they had changed his last name, but the man never adopted him. In 1880 the first of his sisters was born, perhaps that was why he lived with his grama during that time.
I remember that my parents, Chet and Simona Williams, went back to Pennsylvania to find the adoption record and they found none. I think George W.Williams is William Edward Williams' father. Interesting in the above information from Mary Jo, it is again mentioned that no one talked about this. I have always understood that no one talked about it because it was in the family. ja
